Georg Schongauer (ca. 1445–1514)
• Was a German engraver, painter from the Alsace region.
• Born after 1445 in Colmar.
• Son of Kaspar, goldsmith of Augsburg, member of the Council of Colmar from 1445.
• Brother of the well-known engraver Martin Schongauer.
• Schongauer probably trained in his father's workshop.
• Established in Basel in 1482, he was admitted as a master in the Bear Corporation in 1485.
• Albrecht Dürer, during his guild tour, stayed in 1492 with Schongauer who, perhaps, taught him the art of engraving.
• Schongauer sold his house in Basel in 1494 and left for Strasbourg.
• He is credited with several pieces from the treasury of the cathedral of Basel, as well as a silver cross and two monstrances from the parish church of Porrentruy.
• Died between 1495 and 1514 in Strasbourg.
