Francis Smith (fl. ca. 1763 - 1779)
• Was a painter born in Italy.
• Smith appears to have been born in Naples, where he painted topographical views for the tourist trade.
• He accompanied Lord Baltimore to the Levant in 1763-74, and then exhibited in London between 1768-73.
• His output was highly varied, producing a number of scenes from his tours of the Middle East, such as his depiction of The Grand Vizier giving audience to the English Ambassador, as well as views of Deptford Docks, and his 'View of Mount Vesuvius seen from the Strada Santa Lucia, Naples'.
• Painter was active in Naples, Turkey, Greece, Poland and London.
