Juan de la Cruz Cano y Olmedilla (1734-1790)
• Was a Spanish engraver, and cartographer.
• He was active in Madrid.
• For many years, Cano was the cartographer of the king Carlos III of Spain.
• He made maps of Spain and of the Spanish possessions in Latin America.
• He is especially known for a 1775 map of South America.
• Juan de la Cruz was granted a pension for eight years in Paris – along with Manuel Salvador Carmona, Tomás López and Alfonso Cruzado – to establish himself in the technique of sweet carving for map engraving, a specialty for which there was a great need for masters in Spain.
• But Juan de la Cruz's popularity has been given by his prints of types published in 1777.
