Freiherr (Baron) Johann Heinrich von Hurter (1734 – 1799)

• Was a Swiss miniature painter.
• Born in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, 1734.
• Studied in Bern and Paris, settled in London 1777.
• Hurter is recorded as having worked in Berne between 1768 and 1770. 
• Exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1779 to 1781.
• He founded a factory for mathematical and other instruments and in later life split his time between London and Germany.
