Niccolò Tornioli (1598 – 1651)
• Was an Italian painter.
• Born in Siena, Siena province, Tuscany region, Italy, Europe.
• Active in Torino, Torino province, Piemonte region, and in Rome since 1633.
• He began his training as a painter in his hometown with Francesco Rustici.
• In 1642 he became part of the service of Cardinal Francesco Barberini, for whom he carried out various works.
• Later he enjoyed the patronage of the Spada brothers, Virgilio and Cardinal Bernardino, who bought several canvases for his residence.
• Thanks to them he obtained the commission for the design of the mosaics of the Chapel of the Blessed Sacrament of St. Peter in the Vatican.
• He was working on the project during 1647 and 1648, but death prevented him from completing it.
• He painted for the Spada Chapel in the church of San Paolo in Bologna a Cain Slaying Abel and a Jacob Wrestling with the Angel.
