Johann Caspar Schneider (1753-1839)

• Was a German painter.
• Johann Kaspar Schneider was the son of Simon Schneider, a stable servant in the Electoral Life Guard of Mainz, and his wife Agnes.
• He received his artistic training at the electoral court of the art-loving Friedrich Karl Joseph von Erthal under the tutelage of Heidlof.
• Schneider spent most of his creative period in Mainz, where he initially succeeded at the electoral court.
• In 1779, Schneider became self-employed as a portrait painter.
• When Schneider painted a portrait of Countess Sophia von Coudenhoven in 1784, he had finally arrived in higher circles.
• The first landscape painting that can be safely attributed to him dates from 1785.
• The members of the French imperial family became aware of Johann Kaspar Schneider during their stays in "Mayence" and gave him commissions.
• In 1811, Schneider was granted Mainz citizenship. 
• When Johann Wolfgang von Goethe travelled to the Rhine and Main regions in 1814, he visited Mainz and praised the artist.
• In the period from 1830 to 1835 he created his last dated landscape paintings.
