Matthias Read (1669–1747)  

• Was a British painter.

• Born in Clerkenwell, London.

• In 1690 he assisted Jan Wyck in painting scenes of the Battle of Boyne, Ireland.

• He left Ireland soon afterwards and moved to Whitehaven, where he met William Gilpin, Recorder of Carlisle.

• Matthias Read was buried in London in 1747.

• Records indicate he was interred at St Paul’s Church, Covent Garden (also known as the “Actors’ Church”).
