Jean Pénicaud I (ca. 1490–after 1543)
• Jean Pénicaud I was a French painter who painted enamel on copper.
• He was the son of Nardon Pénicaud, founder of the Limoges dynasty of enamel painters (the Pénicauds), brother of Pierre Pénicaud and Léonard Pénicaud.
• Their art was characterized by imprinting enamel colors on copper, painted white, with results that moved further and further away from simple decoration.
•
Jean Pénicaud I often worked together with his brother Léonard, distinguishing himself by a greater influence received from the Italian Renaissance and by a greater choice of colors.
• Among his works we can mention a Flagellation, derived from an engraving by
Albrecht Dürer.
