Domenico Pugliani (1589 – 1658)

• Was an Italian painter.
• Born into a family of wealthy merchants, engaged in the wool processing chain.
• He was a pupil of Matteo Rosselli.
• Began his career as a brachettone on behalf of Bartolomeo Corsini (1545-1613), who commissioned him to veil the nudity that, in his opinion, disfigured paintings of his property.
• Domenico enrolled in 1612 at the Accademia del Disegno, in Florence.
• He was esteemed and protected by Cardinal Carlo de' Medici, brother of Grand Duke Cosimo II.
• In the Medici Casino of San Marco, in Florence, he painted decorative frescoes, including The Transport of the Statue of Cosimo I.
• In 1628 he left for Prague to fresco the Waldstein Palace.
• The client was Albrecht von Wallenstein - who fought in the Thirty Years' War - who owned the building now the seat of the Czech Senate.
• The contract he signed with Domenico Pugliani and dated 16 March 1627, provided for the decoration of the great hall, the audience, two galleries, two oratories and the chapel, for a fee of 2,205 florins.
• According to the two Czech scholars Barbora Klipcová, and Petr Uličný, Pugliani completed the work in 1630 and also painted on top of paintings previously made by Baccio del Bianco.
