Domenico Piola (1627–1703)

• Was an Italian painter.
• Son of the textile merchant Paolo Battista, Domenico was the brother of the painters Pellegro and Giovanni Andrea.
• Initially he was apprenticed in the workshop of his brother Pellegro, and on the latter's death he moved to the workshop of Giovanni Domenico Cappellino.
• In 1643 he was in Rome.
• He became friends with Genoese artist Valerio Castello, of whom he would become successor in the field of large decorative enterprises in Genoa.
• Among his first important commissions were: in 1647 the Martyrdom and Glory of St. James for the oratory of San Giacomo della Marina in Genoa, and the Last Supper (Albenga, Diocesan Museum). 
• In 1666, he began the decoration of the Church of Saints Jerome and Francis Xavier in Jesuit college in Genoa.
• In 1672 he baptized the son of the sculptor Filippo Parodi.
• His workshop, called "Casa Piola", in Salita San Leonardo, became the most important artistic workshop in the city. 
• In 1690 he was the author of the fresco decoration of the Church of San Luca, in collaboration with the quadriturist Anton Maria Haffner.
• Domenico Piola died on 8 April 1703. 
• Piola was assisted by his brother-in-law Stefano Camogli, his sons Paolo Gerolamo and Anton Maria, and his son-in-law Gregorio De Ferrari.
