Otto van Veen (c.1556 – 1629)

• Was a Dutch-Flemish painter, draughtsman, and humanist.
• He was active primarily in Antwerp and Brussels.
• His father, Cornelis Jansz. van Veen, had been Burgomaster.
• He was Peter Paul Rubens' teacher.
• He had a large studio in Antwerp, producing several emblem books.
• He became a master in the Guild of St. Luke in 1593.
• He had two brothers who were painters; Gijsbert van Veen was a respected engraver and Pieter was an amateur.
• His daughter Gertruid was also a painter.
• He worked at the courts of Rudolf II in Prague and William V of Bavaria in Munich.
• He often worked also for the Archdukes of Austria Albert and Isabella, but never as their court painter.
• The displayed painting is a crop from: Otto van Veen, Persian Women, 1597-99.
