• Was an Italian painter and illuminator.
• Son of the merchant Marco.
• Francesco Marmitta was born in Parma.
• He frequented the workshop of the Bolognese painter and goldsmith Francesco Francia, who influenced his activity as a carver, for which Marmitta is mentioned by Giorgio Vasari in his publication The lives of the most excellent painters, sculptors and architects.
• His only documented works are the decorations present in the private Petrarchan codex of the humanist Giacomo Giglio (Kassel, Landesbibliothek), datable to the years 1483-1485.
• As far as attributions are concerned, among the most significant are the Missal of Cardinal Della Rovere, the Offiziolo Durazzo and the San Quentin Altarpiece.
• The Missal of Cardinal Della Rovere, made in the years 1490-1492, provides us with the news of Marmitta's stay in Rome.
• Marmitta married, between the end of 1502 and the beginning of 1503, Isabella, daughter of the goldsmith Innocenzo Canossa.
• They had two sons, Ludovico (1503), who continued his father's activity, and the poet Giacomo, born in 1504.
