Antonín Mánes (1784–1843)

• Was a Czech painter and draftsman.
• Mánes was born and died in Prague.
• He was the son of a miller.
• Studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, first under its director Josef Bergler, and from 1806 in the landscape studio of Karel Postl.
• Between 1835 and 1842 he led the landscape masterclass at the Academy of FIne Arts and steered his students toward plein-air study, among them Bedřich Havránek, Eduard Herold, and his son Josef.
• He eventually went from painting idealized landscapes to a more romanticized approach and was very fond of the Old Masters.
• His sons Josef and Quido and his daughter Amalie also became painters.
• The displayed painting is a crop from: Antonín Machek, Portrait of the Painter Antonín Mánes, c. 1825.
