Leandro Monsù (1656 - 1729)
• Born Christian Reder in Leipzig.
• Was a German artist of Nordic origin but known in Italy as Monsù Leandro.
• Although he is known among collectors as a painter specialising in battles, his output includes numerous landscapes and typical genre scenes relating to his early stay in Veneto and bambocciate.
• After an apprenticeship in Hamburg, he first went to London, then moved permanently to Italy.
• First to Venice and finally to Rome in 1686, where he spent the rest of his life, following the advice of his friend Peter van Bloemen, known as ‘lo Stendardo’.
