Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472–1553)

• Was a was a German Renaissance painter.
• The first evidence of Cranach's skill as an artist comes in a picture dated 1504.
• Cranach was the court painter from 1505 to 1550 to the electors of Saxony in Wittenberg.
• His granddaughter married Polykarp Leyser the Elder, thus making him an ancestor of the Polykarp Leyser family of theologians.
