Jan Matsys (c.1510 – 1575)

• Was a Flemish Renaissance painter.
• He was born in Antwerp.
• He was the son of leading Antwerp painter Quinten Matsys.
• Jan was the older brother of Cornelis, who became a painter and engraver.
• He is known for his history paintings, genre scenes and landscapes.
• Jan also gained a reputation as a painter of the female nude, painted with a sensuality reminiscent of the school of Fontainebleau.
• Together with his brother Cornelis, he was admitted, as a master in the Antwerp Guild of St. Luke in 1531.
• The displayed painting is a crop from: Jan Matsys, Judith with the Head of Holofernes, 1543.
