Gherardo Starnina, c. (1354–1413)

• Was an Italian late Gothic painter.
• After Vasari he was born in 1354.
• Starnina was a student of Antonio Veneziano in Florence.
• He went to Spain, where he worked for John I of Castile.
• According to Vasari, he had very rough and crude manners in his youth, in complete contrast to his manners on his return to Florence from Spain - for Vasari an example of the character-forming effect of stays abroad.
• He is documented in Toledo and Valencia, where he painted altarpieces and frescoes.
• In Spain he was influenced by the international late Gothic style widespread there.
• Frescoes in the Jeronimos Chapel of Santa Maria del Carmine (Florence), preserved only in fragments, are also attributed to him.
