Giovanni Pietro Gnocchi (c. 1533-1609)

• Also known as Johannes Petrus Gnocheus.
• Was an Italian painter.
• Active in Lombardy.
• He was born in Milan.
• Gnocchi was a pupil of Aurelio Luini.
• Gnocchi's activity took place mainly in Milan, Valtellina, the Larian territory and Como; plausibly it was in the latter city that he began an independent activity.
• In fact he already resided there in 1577, when he signed a contract with the Confraternity of S. Pietro in S. Vitale for a banner, now dispersed.
• A Crucifix preserved in the parish church of Beregazzo, signed and dated 1600, is considered, one of his happiest works.
• He was active in Como in 1577–1579.
