Dirck Franchoisz Hals (1591-1656)

• Was a Dutch Golden Age painter and draughtsman from North-Holland.
• He was the younger sibling of the famous Frans Hals but died ten years earlier than his brother.
• Dirck Hals lived in Haarlem all his life, where he also worked.
• He visited Leiden on several occasions, which led to him spending a year there.
• It is likely that he went into apprenticeship with his older brother Frans Hals.
• During his career, he made several paintings in the Merry Company genre, with both indoor and outdoor scenes.
• These paintings were often not without symbolic references that did or did not criticize the depicted company.
• The displayed painting is a crop from:  Dirck Franchoisz Hals, Seated Woman with a Letter, 1633.
