Claude Lorrain (born Claude Gellée; c. 1600 – 1682)

• Was a French painter, draughtsman and etcher.
• He was born in the small village of Chamagne, Vosges.
• He spent most of his life in Italy.
• He joined the workshop of Agostino Tassi in Rome.
• Tassi is known as the rapist of Artemisia Gentileschi.
• He is one of the earliest important artists, to concentrate on landscape painting.
• By the end of the 1630s he was established as the leading landscapist in Italy.
• He produced over 40 etchings, often simplified versions of paintings, mainly before 1642.
• At his death, he owned only four of his paintings, but most of his drawings.
