Louis Gabriel Blanchet (1705-1772)

• Was a French painter.
• In 1727, he won the prestigious Prix de Rome competition.
• This success enabled him to set up a portrait practice in Rome.
• In Rome he was encouraged by the patronage of the Duc de Saint-Aignan, French ambassador to the Holy See.
• He spent many years as a close rival to Pompeo Batoni.
