Joseph Anton Adolf (1729-† after 1772)

• Was a Moravian painter.
• He was born at Nikolsburg in Moravia (now Mikulov in the Czech Republic).
• The son of Joseph Frank Adolph, painter to Prince C. Max von Dietrichstein.
• He studied at the Academy of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture in Vienna.
• He stayed in Rome on study stays, and in 1745 he visited Paris.
• From the mid-1750s, he worked in London at the royal court.

• He became known for painting life-size portraits of important families of the English nobility, such as Caroline D'Arcy, and Benjamin Hancock.

• Perhaps in 1769 he returned to Vienna.

• Here he worked as an "inspector" of the Dietrichstein Picture Gallery.

• After returning to the Czech lands, he worked between 1769 and 1772 at the Archbishop's Castle in Kroměříž.

• He created three large paintings on the ceiling of the Assembly Hall.

• In 1771 he painted altar paintings for the parish church of St. Wenceslas in Mikulov with motifs of the Assassination of St. Wenceslas, the Beheading of St. Barbara and the Last Supper.

• The date of his death is unknown, he was still alive in 1772.
